British Asian Coco is the other founder member
of Visionary Underground, alongside DJ FeelFree.
She originally studied photography and art with
a view to photography being her chosen career path.
Having worked in a busy press agency darkroom and
then as an assistant she became dissatisfied with
straight photography and in 1997 decided to explore
the computer route. This avenue was going to allow
her to combine her skills, and develop them into
digital art, in the form of still and moving images
something that was going to prove perfect for her.
In 1999 Coco discovered VJ software and the concept
blew her away as she realized that this meant she
could build artwork and graphics and then play/perform
them in real time like a DJ does with his or her
records. There was no doubt in her mind that this
is what she wanted to do
be a VJ. As the live
visual element embeds itself deeper into musical
culture, this medium is becoming a more significant
part of the industry a fact of which Overtones Studio
(London), realized, since her meeting them in 1998.
Their support in getting her off the ground whilst
also supporting the whole VU project was monumental.
An integral part of the band Coco is basically the
visual heart of VU and does all their photography,
artwork and design as well as being their VJ. Other
artists/clients that she has photographed, designed
and/or VJed for are: Asian Dub Foundation, Sting,
Adrian Sherwood, Audio Bullys, pianists Katia &
Marielle Labeque, MC Navigator, Marque Gilmore,
XFM 104.9 fm (Coldcut, Fun-Da-Mental, Kasabian,
Ice T, Freestylers, Shut Up & Dance), Toploader,
Catatonia, RDB, Alabama 3 & Un-Cut to name a
few
As well as all VU activity she was XFM's Re-mix night's resident VJ for 3 years (Jun 2003 to Apr 2006).
